The Undergraduate Student Union at my university has set up a health care insurance type deal. It has been in place for three years and it’s supposed to be affordable and easy for students. It’s built right into the tuition and it includes drug and dental coverage as well as travel insurance.
I always opt out because I am covered by my parents as long as I am in school.
But this year was different. This will be my first academic year diagnosed with Crohn’s. I decided to opt out of all aspects of this Student Union plan except the tuition insurance. This means if I need to drop out of school at any time for medical reasons, I will be refunded my tuition in full, even if I have passed the refund date for normal drop-outs.
I have never had to think ahead quite like this before.
I am learning these are the things that change when you discover you have a chronic illness.
