The Next Step:
I saw my GI specialist today. I was expecting it to go like this,
“Yeah the surgery went well, incision is healing great, bowel movements are normal, been managing my diet, don’t have any pain. Thanks so much, see you in three months”.
But as it usually goes, it went in a slightly different direction. One that I should have seen.
Obviously the next step is prevention. During the past few months I have really seen my surgery as a fresh start. I have this squeaky clean new body and I would really like to keep it that way. No more infection, no more fistulization, no more inflammation. I was given three choices: Imuran, Remicade or Humira.
I went in thinking I was going to be put back on Imuran; I did very well on it with no side-effects. But the severity of my disease has proven to be too much for Imuran. It’s just not the right fit for fistulizing Crohn’s. So, my Mom and I chose the big guns today. In a few weeks I will be self-injecting an Anti-TNF into my body.
I have done a bit of research knowing that this was going to be a potential option for me. I don’t love the side-effect profile of this drug. I don’t love that this is the same drug they use to treat cancer. But these side-effects are simply bridges I need to cross IF or WHEN I get to them.
If any of you are on or have been on Remicade/Humira I would so appreciate hearing about your experiences on them.
